Grammar and Sentence Structure

Every week the students will begin the week with three sentences. They will copy the sentence and then write what they notice that the sentences have in common. Finally, they will imitate the style.

This process will be repeated on the same skill later in the week, and then the students will take a quiz to assess their knowledge of the skill.

Each week, the quiz will contain items from previous week's work to be certain students are retaining the knowledge. There will also be short writing assessments where the students indicate that they are using the skills.

We refer to this activity as Sentences of the Week or Skill of the Week (S-O-W). This method of teaching grammar and writing skills is the brainchild of Kelly Gallagher, teacher and author dedicated to helping students become better readers and writers.
